If you are buying or selling your home then it is likely that you will employ the services of a conveyancer or solicitor to help with the legal aspects of the transaction.

With hundreds of solicitors working in the UK, finding the right one for you can be tough.  Our guide provides three tips for finding the right conveyancer or solicitor for you.

Ask around

One of the best ways to find a reputable and reliable solicitor is to ask for recommendations from friends, colleagues or family.  Lots of people that you know will have enjoyed good or bad experiences with buying or selling a property and they may be able to provide you with a recommendation of who to use – or who to avoid.

Get quotes

The cost of conveyancing services can vary significantly from company to company.  Some solicitors offer cut price conveyancing deals but you may find that you don’t receive personal service from these firms.

It’s always advisable to obtain two or three quotes from solicitors in order to get an idea of cost.  However, think twice before simply choosing a firm based on cost alone – you may get much better service or advice by paying a little bit more.

Find out who you will be dealing with

Buying or selling a house is likely to be the biggest financial transaction of your life.  So, it’s important that you find out exactly who you will be dealing with at the solicitor’s firm. If you are buying for the first time, a solicitor can guide you at every step and help you avoid mistakes along the way.

Cut price conveyancers may assign you a junior member of staff to administer your case who may not have the experience or knowhow to spot or deal with any problems.  You may prefer to pay a little bit more and have a dedicated, qualified solicitor as your point of contact.
