Autumn Statement: Mixed feelings on lettings agency fee ban

The Chancellor’s decision to ban lettings agency fees for tenants drew a rather jubilant reaction from bodies representing Britain’s private renters, and the homeless, but the lettings industry itself was inevitably less than happy with the decision.

Reaction came thick and fast from many quarters, and the rights and wrongs of the ban will undoubtedly be debated for some time yet, but in a roundup of initial comment, both sides of the debate have their say:

John Healey MP, Labour’s shadow housing secretary, said: “Labour has long backed ending sky-high letting fees for renters, while Conservative MPs including the Prime Minister have repeatedly voted against it, so any change of heart is welcome.
