Today, Sadiq Khan began his new job as Mayor of London, following a landslide victory in last week’s elections.
The Labour Party’s former Tooting MP won 1,310,143 votes in the election on Thursday 5th May, placing him far ahead of his Conservative Party rival, Zac Goldsmith, who received 994,614 votes. His victory was announced late on Friday 6th May, with Khan reportedly riding the bus into work today for his first 24 hours on the job.
Khan’s campaign for Mayor focused heavily on the housing market, as London property values continue to climb out of reach for many, while high rents prevent many tenants from moving out of the private rented sector. Boris Johnson’s successor will also be under pressure to retain London’s international appeal in the business community.
