Would be tenants hit by rise in online ‘rental fraud’

Online rental fraud – where fake landlords dupe would-be tenants into transferring deposits for non-existent properties – is on the rise, thanks to strong demand for properties.

Reports concerning the scam leapt by 44 per cent last year when almost 3,200 house hunters contacted the police.

The Local Government Association suggests this represents just 5 per cent of victims.

It said most people do not come forward because of embarrassment.
