Plaster and plasterboard are believed to be able to withstand heat for around 20 minutes before disintegrating.\u00a0 However, when plaster intumescent paint is applied, this can be increased to up to an hour.<\/p>\n<h2>Timber<\/h2>\n<p>Intumescent paint for timber is designed to improve the strength of timber products in two ways. First, it helps to increase the length of time that timber can withstand heat, from pretty much nothing to an hour.\u00a0 Second, it helps to prevent flames from spreading along the timber\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n<h2>Steel<\/h2>\n<p>This is the most common intumescent paint and is designed to increase the length of time that structural steel can withhold high temperatures before failing.
