The OFT has recommended legislation in order to \u2018make the <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Market (economics)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/market-economics\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/market_economics;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Market_(economics)\" >market<\/a> work better for tenants\u2019. They also want agents to be forced to provide a full statement of fees prior to a tenant signing a contract.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Keep reading to find out more about the OFT\u2019s recommendations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oft.gov.uk\/\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">OFT <\/a>recommends legislation to stop unexpected lettings agent fees<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The OFT reviewed around 4,000 complaints in 2011 and found that a majority of these related to fees and charges made by lettings agents. Following this review, the OFT report said: \u201cAgents can cause problems where they exploit customers&#8217; behavioural biases by not being transparent about their fees or what they have on offer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Cavendish Elithorn, a senior director at the OFT, said: \u201cIt&#8217;s important that tenants ask for key information, but we also believe that Government, industry and enforcers working together can have a real impact and improve overall standards in the lettings market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cThis report sets out our view on what <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Land improvement\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/land-improvement\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/land_improvement;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.0gjvr_;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Land_improvement\" >improvements<\/a> could be made to address concerns with this market and we are keen to play our part in bringing together those involved in the lettings industry to focus efforts where they are most needed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Nick Marr, director of private house sales website The House Shop\u00a0welcomed <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Plan\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/plan\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/plan;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.018jrr;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Plan\" >plans<\/a> to challenge the sharp practices of many high street <a href=\"https:\/\/jbsbristol.co.uk\/\">lettings agents.<\/a> He said: \u201cVarious investigations have found that many unscrupulous lettings agents are <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Eminent domain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/eminent-domain\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/eminent_domain;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.0127bq;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Eminent_domain\" >taking<\/a> unexpected fees from tenants as well as offering poor service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u201cI\u2019d encourage both <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Leasehold estate\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/leasehold-estate\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/leasehold_estate;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.03jg1x;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Leasehold_estate\" >tenants<\/a> and <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Landlord\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/landlord\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/landlord;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.02mx_6;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Landlord\" >landlords<\/a> to consider using an online lettings agent.
