This relief means you don&#8217;t pay any Capital Gains Tax on the profits you make when you sell.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">Now, officials are consulting on a change that would mean <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"United Kingdom\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/united-kingdom\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/united_kingdom;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.07ssc;http:\/\/www4.wiwiss.fu-berlin.de\/factbook\/resource\/United_Kingdom;http:\/\/eurostat.linked-statistics.org\/dic\/c_birth#UK;http:\/\/yago-knowledge.org\/resource\/United_Kingdom;http:\/\/www4.wiwiss.fu-berlin.de\/eurostat\/resource\/countries\/United_Kingdom;http:\/\/eurostat.linked-statistics.org\/dic\/c_ctrl#UK;http:\/\/openei.org\/resources\/United_Kingdom;http:\/\/sws.geonames.org\/2635167\/;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/United_Kingdom\" >UK<\/a> residents with two <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Home\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/home\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/home;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.01l0mw;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Home\" >homes<\/a> would no longer be able to elect a main residence that is exempt from capital gains tax.Instead the main residence would be decided by HM Revenue &amp;Customs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">The rules as they stand give relief from tax on profits made in the previous three years. This has allowed owners of multiple <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Housing estate\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/housing-estate\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/housing_estate;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.01rtvp;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Housing_estate\" >homes<\/a> to &#8216;flip&#8217; their main residence so that more than one qualifies for the relief. This allows them to reduce the tax charge when they sell.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">The Government has already moved to reduce the relief from three years to 18 months, coming into force from 6 April. However, a recent Treasury and HMRC consultation paper on the treatment of non-residents contained proposed changes that would also change the rules for UK residents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span size=\"3\" style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b><u>Changes will be significant<\/u><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">The Government wants to make non-residents pay tax on their UK property profits for the first time. However, in order to do this it needs to remove the ability for non-residents to elect a UK home as their main <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Title (property)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/title-property\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/title_property;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.01gzht;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Title_(property)\" >property<\/a>, as would be possible under current rules. However, it also means removing it for UK residents.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">The change will be significant for those with two homes, according to Patricia Mock, a tax director at Deloitte. It&#8217;s not exactly clear how they will keep on top of it.
