Statistics from the <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/ons\/rel\/census\/2011-census-analysis\/overcrowding-and-under-occupation-in-england-and-wales\/rpt-overcrowding-and-under-occupation-in-england-and-wales.html\" target=\"\">Office for National Statistics (ONS)<\/a> has revealed that the number of people living in households with six or more occupants has surged by a quarter in the last decade.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Three million people now live in a household with at least five other individuals and this type of living has become the fastest growing category of <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/housing\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/housing;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.0q3zhcj;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Housing\" >housing<\/a>. Keep reading to find out more.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Over half a million households with six or more residents<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">An analysis of Census data from <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/england\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/england;http:\/\/sws.geonames.org\/6269131\/;http:\/\/openei.org\/resources\/England;http:\/\/yago-knowledge.org\/resource\/England;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.02jx1;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/England\" >England<\/a> and Wales shows that there were 543,000 households with at least six residents, making it the fastest-growing category of housing with a 25 per cent jump in 10 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The ONS said the surge was thought to be down to &#8216;economic or cultural factors&#8217;. More young people are living with parents because they cannot afford to buy a <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"homes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/housing-estate\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/housing_estate;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.01rtvp;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Housing_estate\" >home<\/a> while an increased number of older couples live with their adult children.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The data also includes unrelated people living under the same roof, which is widely seen among immigrant workers in more expensive areas of the country such as <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/london\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/london;http:\/\/sws.geonames.org\/2643743\/;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.04jpl;http:\/\/yago-knowledge.org\/resource\/London;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/London\" >London<\/a>. In the borough of Newham more than one in 10 households fell into the &#8216;six or more persons&#8217; category.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Outside the capital, Luton, Slough, Bradford, <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/birmingham\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/birmingham;http:\/\/sws.geonames.org\/2655603\/;http:\/\/yago-knowledge.org\/resource\/Birmingham;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.0k33p;http:\/\/sws.geonames.org\/3333125\/;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Birmingham\" >Birmingham<\/a> and Leicester were the areas with the highest proportion of &#8216;six or more&#8217;.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The ONS report said: &#8220;All of these areas have been identified as having high proportions of concealed families [such as inter-generational families], high levels of overcrowding and also have high proportions of the population identifying with Indian, Pakistani or Bangladeshi ethnic groups.&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Owner occupied <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/property\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/property;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.05wrt;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Property\" >property<\/a> in decline<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<div><b><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The ONS data also revealed that the number of owner occupied households has declined as rented <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Lodging\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/lodging\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/lodging;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.01hjj_;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Lodging\" >accommodation<\/a> grows more popular.
