We grumble about crowded tubes, busy streets and extortionate prices, without doing a thing about it. Even if secretly, I\u00a0think we\u00a0all enjoy being sucked into\u00a0London&#8217;s\u00a0vibrant, eclectic black-hole but what is the actual cost of living in London?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">The UK minimum wage is \u00a36.31 and many London workers are on, or close to, the minimum wage. The London Living Wage is \u00a38.80, which for a 40 hour a week job would give a salary of \u00a318,304. This is before <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/tax\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/tax;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.07g82;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Tax\" >tax<\/a> and when you factor in the cost of <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"rental\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/renting\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/renting;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.01y857;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Renting\" >renting<\/a>, bills, travel and general life, you&#8217;re not left with much. Despite this, many employers refuse to pay the London Living Wage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">Rented <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/property\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/property;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.05wrt;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Property\" >property<\/a> has been getting progressively more expensive, as aspiring <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"homes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/home\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/home;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.01l0mw;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Home\" >home<\/a> owners cannot afford a deposit. I write this article in my box-room of my grotty flat-share, in a grotty area, listening to my grotty flatmate repeatedly slam his door for\u00a0no particular\u00a0reason. For my pleasure, I pay over \u00a3450 per month, not including bills, for this inhospitable shelter. If I was on minimum wage, my salary (pre-tax) would be just over \u00a313,000. Over half of that would be wiped out by rent and bills alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5.0pt;\"><span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">London is a city with vast extremes in wages, rent and quality of life, and the minimum wage is sorely inadequate for London life. This month, acclaimed film director Ken Loach, encouraged a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bectu.org.uk\/advice-resources\/library\/1602\">boycott of Picture House Cinemas<\/a> as they\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0pay a living wage or even\u00a0corporation tax.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5.0pt;\"><span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5.0pt;\"><span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\"><b><i>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It is hypocritical to sell fair trade coffee and then not pay a fair wage. Come on Picture House, don&#8217;t ask the\u00a0people who\u00a0work for you to subsidise your business! \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/i><\/b><b>Ken Loach.<\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5.0pt;\"><b><span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">For a school leaver in their first job, possibly still living at <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Housing estate\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/housing-estate\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/housing_estate;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.01rtvp;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Housing_estate\" >home<\/a>, a wage around the minimum or\u00a0living wage\u00a0may well suffice. However, for people in their mid to late 20&#8217;s,\u00a0looking to\u00a0lead a fun lifestyle in the capital, a salary upwards of 25k will be required. If\u00a0you&#8217;re\u00a0looking to get on the property ladder, and\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0have significant support from relatives, or generous spouses, you&#8217;ll need a salary in the upper 30,000&#8217;s to stand a chance at saving for that deposit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">Many employers won&#8217;t\u00a0embrace the\u00a0London living wage, and increasingly pay under the odds, as they know\u00a0they&#8217;ll\u00a0still get a multitude of creditable applicants. In a previous role I demanded a \u00a35,000 pay rise to bring my salary in line with the national\u00a0average for\u00a0that job title. After nearly four months of heel dragging I was offered a \u00a3360 pay rise. I defiantly resigned the day after, and walked out chuckling as I joined the other <a href=\"http:\/\/data.london.gov.uk\/dashboard-summary\/jobs\">325,000 Londoners looking for work.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">Despite the prices and the inevitable flat-share woes, there is something about this interconnected, pulsating city that keeps me here, indefinitely but happily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span size=\"2\"
