This was a two-<a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"floors\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/storey\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/storey;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.02vk6kk;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Storey\" >storey<\/a> cesspool, riddled with constant dirt, depravity and delinquents. I shudder when I think back to the horrendous state of the <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/kitchen\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/kitchen;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.0d4wf;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Kitchen\" >kitchen<\/a> and the layers of grime on the crockery, which was soon to be thrown out of the window by my morally repugnant flatmate.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">How far my life has improved now\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0working as a professional writer. I now live in a 2- storey\u00a0cesspool, riddled with constant dirt, with a morally repugnant flatmate &#8211; but in <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/london\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/london;http:\/\/sws.geonames.org\/2643743\/;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.04jpl;http:\/\/yago-knowledge.org\/resource\/London;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/London\" >London<\/a>. Perhaps the standard of private <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Lodging\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/lodging\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/lodging;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.01hjj_;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Lodging\" >accommodation<\/a> in Preston has improved since the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span lang=\"zxx\"><u><a href=\"http:\/\/thelittlehousecompany.com\/news\/140\/how_bbcs_move_to_media_city_uk_has_transformed_north\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">BBC&#8217;s move to Media City, Salford, in 2011<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. Perhaps it\u00a0hasn&#8217;t. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">My second year accommodation was equally messy, but much more fun. The 16 male friends I lived with provided mess and amusement in equal measure. One time we thought a flatmate had moved out and we did what all self-respecting students would do. We got out a large sword and smashed the plates he&#8217;d left into a million pieces for no apparent reason. It turned out he&#8217;d just gone to the shops with his parents, and it was a struggle to explain our actions to his beleaguered mum and dad.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">For my third year, I lived in a smaller <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"houses\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/house\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/house;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.03jm5;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/House\" >house<\/a>, which was much nicer, but still fun. Win, win. I&#8217;ve not experienced this again since moving to London. Student accommodation ranges dramatically with places in <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"student housing\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/dormitory\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/dormitory;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.01t_yc;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Dormitory\" >halls of residence<\/a> much more closely moderated. For instance, the oven I had in first year that barely worked, would have been replaced by the University, had I been in halls. My <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/landlord\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/landlord;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.02mx_6;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Landlord\" >landlord<\/a> instead just opted to turn his phone off. There are some real <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.studentbeans.com\/mag\/en\/campus\/your-worst-student-landlord-horror-stories\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span lang=\"zxx\"><u><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">horror stories from students\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/u><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span lang=\"zxx\"><span style=\"color: #00000a;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">and my experiences could have been worse.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">My meagre \u00a342 per week <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Renting\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/renting\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/renting;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.01y857;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Renting\" >rent<\/a> in first year would certainly not be found anywhere now. The <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span lang=\"zxx\"><u><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2010\/aug\/21\/best-worst-student-accommodation\">largest student accommodation<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/u><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">is 33 floors high and towers over London&#8217;s Spitalfields Market. The amazing views, the plasma TVs, broadband internet and gym are overshadowed by the whopping \u00a314, 280 a head rent. So this venue is surely only for the rarely found &#8216;ultra-rich student&#8217; with a spare \u00a315k lying around. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">My University landlords never cared about <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span lang=\"zxx\"><u><a href=\"http:\/\/thelittlehousecompany.com\/property-blog\/347\/the_secret_to_being_good_landlord_balancing_profit_with_service\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">balancing profits with service<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. When looking for private student accommodation, keep an eye out for landlords who claim they&#8217;ll make <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Renovation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/renovation\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/renovation;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.06b49c;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Renovation\" >renovations<\/a> before you move in. In my experience these renovations never seemed to happen. However, despite the chaos and mess, my University flat-shares were a <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Land lot\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/land-lot\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/land_lot;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.0gs32y;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Land_lot\" >lot<\/a> of fun and I met some interesting characters that I\u00a0wouldn&#8217;t\u00a0have\u00a0done if I&#8217;d have lived in University halls of accommodation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span
