According to Parliament briefing papers regarding energy prices, \u2018the price of domestic gas and electricity has generally increased over the past eight years after around a decade of falling prices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><b>But what is causing the increase?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 150%;\">Well, your gas bill, for instance, does not just indicate the cost of the gas you\u2019re using, it also encompasses the wholesale cost (which is constantly on the rise due to increasing demand), distribution, government tax, and, of course, the supplier needs to make a profit. As for electricity, the burning of gas accounts for 35-50% of the electricity generated in the UK. That means that when gas prices rise, electricity prices follow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\">\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/www.movingguru.com\/movingguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Choosing-gas-and-electricity-providers.jpg\" alt=\"\" align=\"none\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\">Image from: www.movingguru.com<\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\">\n<p class=\"caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\">In 2012, the average household spent \u00a3106 a month on household energy, a massive 56% increase from 2002\u2019s average of \u00a369. The amount spent on gas also increased by 56% over the same period. Government statistics claim that the average cost of direct debit electricity bills in 2013 had gone up by \u00a336 since 2012. Interestingly, the region with the lowest all-round electricity costs was the East Midlands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\">However, while the bills are getting higher here in Great Britain, we still rank relatively low across the rest of <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/europeanproperty.com\" target=\"\">Europe<\/a>. For electricity prices, <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/london\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/london;http:\/\/sws.geonames.org\/2643743\/;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.04jpl;http:\/\/yago-knowledge.org\/resource\/London;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/London\" >London<\/a> ranks 12<sup>th<\/sup> out of 15 major cities with Copenhagen <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Eminent domain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/eminent-domain\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/eminent_domain;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.0127bq;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Eminent_domain\" >taking<\/a> the highest spot at almost twice the price. For gas, London is actually the cheapest at \u20ac4.74, well below the average \u20ac8.03, and even more so behind Stockholm\u2019s massive \u20ac20.84. This information might mean little to those of us still scraping together all the pennies we can find to pay our bills, but it\u2019s still a comfort to know that it could be a <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Land lot\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/land-lot\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/land_lot;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.0gs32y;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Land_lot\" >lot<\/a> worse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\">Unfortunately, with the constant trouble in the Middle East pushing up the price of oil \u2013 and with it, gas &#8211; and increasing demand for natural gas across the world, the cost of energy bills will likely stay on the rise for the foreseeable future. The best way for consumers to lower their energy bills is to try and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.movingguru.com\/movingguide\/choosing-gas-and-electricity-providers\/\">make their homes more energy efficient<\/a>. The government recently introduced <a href=\"http:\/\/thelittlehousecompany.com\/property-blog\/280\/the_new_green_deal\">the new Green Deal<\/a> to provide financial support for <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Home insurance\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/home-insurance\/\"
