A pier should be a calm, homely place where you can watch the waves and have an ice cream, but at present, Birnbeck Pier in Somerset does not look that inviting, given that it\u2019s been closed since 1994.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">This pier is the only one in the country linking mainland to an island. Construction began in 1864, and it was opened to the public in June 1867. Over time, the pier grew and grew, incorporating more attractions and amusements, but in 1897, most of it was destroyed in a great fire. The pier and its attractions were rebuilt, but in the early twentieth century, it struggled in a competition against the Grand Pier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In 1941, it was taken over and remade as HMS Birnbeck; all the rides were removed and it became a weapons testing facility. It did revert back to its original purpose after the war, but went through many owners until the whole pier, except for the lifeboat station, was closed due to storm <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Property damage\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/property-damage\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/property_damage;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.0clxv;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Property_damage\" >damage<\/a>. It is currently on English Heritage\u2019s Buildings at Risk register. A full history of the pier can be found on <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span lang=\"zxx\"><u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.birnbeck-pier.co.uk\/history.html\">this page<\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">At the moment, however, it is being bought up by <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span lang=\"zxx\"><u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnmestates.com\/\">CNM Estates<\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span>, who plan and develop many properties from hotels to <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Dormitory\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/dormitory\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/dormitory;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.01t_yc;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Dormitory\" >student housing<\/a>. CNM are currently attempting to come up with a solution on how to develop the pier, and they intend to build hotels and homes in the area. The North Somerset Council, however, <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span lang=\"zxx\"><u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-somerset-29323339\">have expressed doubts over the capability of CNM<\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span>, saying that they are still owed thousands in demolition costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">There have been several attempts to revive the pier over the years but they have not been met with success. <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span lang=\"zxx\"><u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.birnbeck-pier.co.uk\/\">The Friends of the Old Pier Society<\/a><\/u><\/span><\/span>, formed in 1996, has been pushing for a <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"remodelling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/renovation\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/renovation;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.06b49c;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Renovation\" >renovation<\/a> of the area.
