The Carbuncle Cup is a trophy awarded by the magazine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bdonline.co.uk\/\">Building Design<\/a> and was developed as a tongue-in-cheek response to the Stirling Prize, which celebrates the <em>best<\/em> contributions to architecture in the past year.<\/p>\n<p>Previous unfortunate recipients of and nominees for this dubious award are the Woolwich Central, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stratalondon.com\/tower\">Strata tower<\/a> in Elephant and Castle and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vauxhalltower.com\/\">Vauxhall Tower<\/a>. But only one of these has made it onto <em>my<\/em> list. Read on to find out which others have joined it.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> M by Montcalm Signature Building<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hotelchatter.com\/files\/98243\/MontcalmSh01151.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"541\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/www.hotelchatter.com\/zip\/EC1V%201JH<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This building now dominates the walk north from the Old Street roundabout, which is very unfortunate for any hungover hipsters on a Saturday morning. The extreme angles of the 23-story <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mbymontcalm.co.uk\/\">luxury hotel<\/a> create a huge-scale optical illusion that confuses the senses and is enough to make anyone feel a little queasy, even when of sober mind. From some lines of sight, it looks as though the building is indented at the front, whereas other angles show that this indent is in fact the apex protruding outwards. The effect is perpetuated by slanted windows and so it is hard to believe that the <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Room\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/room\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/room;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.06ht1;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Room\" >rooms<\/a> inside this new high tech hotel won\u2019t be sloped too!<\/p>\n<p>It is admittedly an intelligent and ambitious design and I\u2019m of the opinion that this way of thinking should be encouraged. However, perhaps this mind-set should be reserved more for non-functional smaller scale buildings that do not have such a bearing on the local aesthetic?<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> Woolwich Centre<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i.telegraph.co.uk\/multimedia\/archive\/03026\/Woolwich-Central_3026752b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"387\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/finance\/property\/news\/11074560\/Carbuncle-Cup-2014-Woolwich-Central-named-Britains-ugliest-new-building-by-Building-Design.html<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The winner of the Carbuncle Cup in 2014, this building has taken the recent glass-cladding craze and sprinted off with it into South <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/london\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/london;http:\/\/sws.geonames.org\/2643743\/;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.04jpl;http:\/\/yago-knowledge.org\/resource\/London;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/London\" >London<\/a>. It is a huge behemoth that does not suit the surrounding area and was described as \u2018oppressive\u2019, \u2018arrogant\u2019 and \u2018inept\u2019 by the judges. As you can see, it sports a large Tesco supermarket throughout its vacuous ground floor, and the upper <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Floor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/floor\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/floor;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.0l7_8;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Floor\" >floors<\/a> are reserved for flats. As the old joke goes \u2013 What\u2019s the best thing about living up there? You don\u2019t have to look at the Woolwich Central building. And don\u2019t be fooled, it\u2019s a new building I promise. What were the architects thinking with those mis-matched, rust-coloured and weathered bookends? I could get on board with the white step design in the middle (maybe without the window boxes that seem to be randomly dotted around), but the gigantic rusty tower at the end is certainly making a statement, and not a good one. A few ill-advised buildings across our nation\u2019s capital for your delectation. But I don\u2019t want to leave you on a sour note. Please don\u2019t despair, there are plenty of wonderful new builds dotted around London.
