Political unrest was also an issue, with the eventual beginning of World War II at the very end of the decade.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The D\u00e9cor of the Thirties<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The interior design of the era was very much an evolution of the d\u00e9cor of the 1920s; Art Deco was still very popular, as was Modernism. This was increasingly combined with historical styles such as that of the Tudor and Georgian eras.<\/p>\n<p>Electricity was more widely available, with lighting and appliances increasingly popular. However to a certain extent this was still only really accessible to the wealthiest in early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century society.<\/p>\n<p>Furniture was minimalist, often heavily influenced by European and Bauhaus architects and designers. The three-piece suite also became an important fixture of the 1930s family home.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 507px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.art-deco-style.com\/image-files\/art_deco_bedroom_eltham_castle_uk.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"497\" height=\"404\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">source: art-deco-style.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Important Figures<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>European artists and architects such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marcelbreuer.org\/\">Marcel Breuer<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alvaraalto.fi\/index_en.htm\">Alvar Aalto<\/a> popularised modernist wooden furniture, contributing pieces such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aalto.com\/aalto-42armchair.html\">cantilever chair<\/a>. In the art world, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edwardhopper.net\/\">Edward Hopper<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grantwoodartgallery.org\/grantwood.htm\">Grant Wood<\/a>\u2019s realist paintings provided an artistic insight into everyday American life.<\/p>\n<p>Back in the UK, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.claricecliff.co.uk\/\">Clarice Cliff<\/a> was a ceramics designer whose work became extremely well-known during the thirties.
