Part of this was the Festival of Britain which took place in 1951 and featured exhibitions on science and technology as well as the arts, architecture and design.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953, the upbeat mood of the decade was very much reflected in the era\u2019s interior design.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 406px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/i106.photobucket.com\/albums\/m279\/awsma6\/1950s_interior_design.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"396\" height=\"387\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">source: 1950satomicranchhouse.blogspot.co.uk<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>The d\u00e9cor of the fifties<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rebuilding and redecorating <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"House\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/house\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/house;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.03jm5;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/House\" >houses<\/a> inspired people to take more of an interest than ever in the interior design of their homes, with magazines full of tips and ideas for <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Home insurance\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/home-insurance\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/home_insurance;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.0313mp;http:\/\/yago-knowledge.org\/resource\/Home_insurance;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Home_insurance\" >homeowners<\/a>. This resulted in a style of d\u00e9cor that was much more fun, modern and colourful than the austere look of the previous decade.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Room\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/room\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/room;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.06ht1;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Room\" >Rooms<\/a> were light, airy and had an open plan layout to best display the new shapes and styles of tables, chairs and sofas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Important Figures<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New fashions in furniture were driven by the likes of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eamesfoundation.org\/\">Charles and Ray Eames<\/a> designing the iconic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.conranshop.co.uk\/designers\/charles-and-ray-eames.html\">Eames lounge and DSW chairs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For colour and print, the name of the decade was <a href=\"https:\/\/designmuseum.org\/designers\/robin-and-lucienne-day\">Lucienne Day<\/a>; her colourful, artistic designs featured on everything from wallpaper to ceramics. She was heavily influenced by artists such as Mir\u00f3, Kandinsky and Klee, which allowed people to incorporate into their own homes the sort of design which had been previously reserved for galleries and collectors.
