It seems that London also has a significant housing problem\u2026<\/p>\n<p>In the run up to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.24dash.com\/news\/housing\/2016-04-28-Zac-yet-to-commit-to-Lifetime-Homes-standard?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\">mayoral elections<\/a>, it seems that <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"affordable\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/affordable-housing\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/affordable_housing;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.09jvc1;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Affordable_housing\" >affordable housing<\/a> in the capital has been a hot topic of conversation. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.generationrent.org\">Generation Rent<\/a>, an organisation campaigning with private renters \u201cfor professionally managed, secure, decent and affordable privately <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"rental\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/renting\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/renting;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.01y857;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Renting\" >rented<\/a> homes\u201d, have been campaigning for fairer housing and rental laws since 2014. And apparently such a campaign has never been more needed, as the organisation\u2019s hashtag <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/genrentuk\">#VentYourRent<\/a>\u00a0reveals a stunning number of Londoners being unfairly treated by <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Landlord\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/landlord\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/landlord;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.02mx_6;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Landlord\" >landlords<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/let-for-free\" title=\"letting agents\">letting agents<\/a>, whilst still paying a premium price tag for the pleasure.<\/p>\n<p><a London may be famed for it\u2019s Victorian history, it certainly does not mean that the city\u2019s residents want to be living the same lifestyle as our ancestors. Renting used to be a cheap, temporary option for people who could not afford to buy. But now, rental prices have overtaken monthly mortgage payments in many areas, meaning that many people will never have the spare money to actually own their own home; according to Generation Rent, \u201ctwo thirds of private renters would rather own their own home\u201d. As part of Ms Berry\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sianberry.london\/news\/housing\/2016-01-28-london-renters-union\/\">campaign<\/a>, she proposes to set up a London Renters Union, \u201cwhich will be funded and supported by City Hall, will help renters to organise to rein in private rents and expose rogue <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Letting agent\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/letting-agent\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/letting_agent;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.02qpgdf;http:\/\/yago-knowledge.org\/resource\/Letting_agent;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Letting_agent\" >lettings agents<\/a>.\u201d Being a private renter herself, it definitely seems as though Sian is understanding of the unstable and insecure nature of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.generationrent.org\/policies\">private rental market<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the horror stories that we have read about private renters, in many ways the private rental <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Market (economics)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/market-economics\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/market_economics;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Market_(economics)\" >market<\/a> is a blessing. This year, features editor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedebrief.co.uk\">The Debrief<\/a>, Vicky Spratt, started a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\">change.org<\/a>\u00a0petition to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/brandon-lewis-make-renting-fair-in-england\">Make Renting Fair in England<\/a>. Spratt states that \u201cover the last 9 years, agency fees have cost me over \u00a32000- and I\u2019m only 28\u201d. This is an unfortunate reality for many young professionals all over the country, who often can\u2019t afford to buy their own <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/property\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/property;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.05wrt;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Property\" >property<\/a>, yet are forced into paying unnecessary agency fees in order to live independently.
