href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/are-first-time-buyers-failing-to-count-the-cost-of-home-ownership\/7174\/\"><strong>first-time buyers are struggling<\/strong><\/a><strong> to get onto the nation\u2019s <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/property\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/property;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.05wrt;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Property\" >property<\/a> ladder and most point to the price of <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"rental\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/renting\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/renting;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.01y857;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Renting\" >rent<\/a> preventing them from owning property.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The survey by Tiles Direct questioned more than 10,000 people about what they thought was the biggest barrier that prevented people saving up for a deposit on their first <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"homes\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/home\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/home;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.01l0mw;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Home\" >home<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Respondents placed high rent prices in first place, followed by the cost of living and in third place was a lack of well-paid job opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>From the data, the survey reveals that more than half of <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"tenant\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/leasehold-estate\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/leasehold_estate;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.03jg1x;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Leasehold_estate\" >tenants<\/a> aged between 25 and 34 years of age, and it&#8217;s an average of 30% for all respondents, believe that the rents people are paying are too high for them to save for a <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"houses\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/house\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/house;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.03jm5;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/House\" >house<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The average rent in London is now around \u00a31,500<\/h2>\n<p>According to a survey published recently by HomeLet, the average rent in <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/london\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/london;http:\/\/sws.geonames.org\/2643743\/;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.04jpl;http:\/\/yago-knowledge.org\/resource\/London;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/London\" >London<\/a> is now around \u00a31,500 &#8211; but from the first time buyer survey, just 31% of Londoners said the price of rent was the biggest stumbling <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"City block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/city-block\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/city_block;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.03sjz2;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/City_block\" >block<\/a> to buying a house.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison, 59% of people who live in the North East of England said rents were preventing people buying.<\/p>\n<p>Campbell Robb is the chief executive of homelessness charity Shelter and he says: \u201cGeneration Rent are resigning themselves to a life in unstable, expensive private renting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, not all respondents said the high price of rents was the biggest downfall for first-time buyers; 6% said first-time buyers had irresponsible spending habits which prevented them from saving.<\/p>\n<h2>First time buyers lack the motivation to save<\/h2>\n<p>Another 9%, said first-time buyers lack the motivation to save &#8211; and this proportion doubled in the 55 to 64 years of age band with 18% saying this.<\/p>\n<p>One of the surprise issues that comes out of the survey is that 17% of those aged between 18 and 24 also agree that spending habits prevent them from saving &#8211; the figures breakdown as 10% saying they have an inability to save, while 7% say they are guilty of &#8216;reckless spending&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Among the other responses, people pointed to the country\u2019s housing shortage for being to blame, fast rising house prices and the domination of <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"Landlord\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/landlord\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/landlord;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.02mx_6;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Landlord\" >landlords<\/a> snapping up <a class=\"wl-entity-page-link\" title=\"buy-to-let\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehouseshop.com\/property-blog\/buy-to-let\/\" data-id=\"http:\/\/data.wordlift.io\/wl0502\/entity\/buy_to_let;http:\/\/rdf.freebase.com\/ns\/m.083ycg;http:\/\/dbpedia.org\/resource\/Buy_to_let\" >buy to let<\/a> properties which prevent first-time buyers accessing cheaper homes.<\/p>\n<p>The survey follows research conducted by Halifax which found that first-time buyers need to save, an average, a deposit on their first home of more than \u00a330,000.<\/p>\n<p>However, it should come as no surprise that for first-time buyers in London the situation is much worse and they need, on average, a deposit of \u00a390,000 to get onto the property ladder.<\/p>\n<p>The survey also revealed that the first-time buyers are buying a property worth, on average, \u00a3190,000 with the average deposit being 17% of its purchase price.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The bad news for first-time buyers in London is that they have to fork out \u00a3368,000 and need a deposit of \u00a391,400 just to get onto the capital&#8217;s property
