Anyone who ever spent his or her childhood caravanning down to Wales for the summer will tell you that owning a mobile home is pretty darn fun. Naturally, these holidays would entail a long car drive with squabbling siblings, limited toilet breaks, and fruitless attempts to play cards in the back seat. That said, being able to get away with the family for a few weeks without the hassle of finding decent, well-priced accommodation definitely beats spending the summer in your own back garden. So lets take a look at some of the best and wackiest mobile homes available.

Last year, the most expensive motor-home in the world went on sale for $3 million in Dubai. Clearly this isn’t the kind of caravan in which you’ll take your kids to the seaside! It has two floors, a master bedroom with an en-suite, cocktail bar, expandable sides for more living space, a pop-up roof deck, and self-cleaning exteriors. Oh, and did we mention that its entirely covered in gold and has under-floor heating?

Remember that scene from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang where Chitty drifts halfway out to sea and the car transforms into a boat? Of course, that could never be done in real life. Right? Enter the Terra Wind, a luxury amphibious motor home perfect for those oh-so-frequent occasions when the road suddenly diverges into a lake. Still, such a vehicle might not be so laughable here in England with all the rain we get. Just as a side note, this motor home doesn’t have the capability to fly like Chitty, but maybe in the future….

Ever heard of the phrase taking everything but the kitchen sink? Well now you can literally take everything including the kitchen sink on holiday with you, all strapped to the back of your bicycle! Enter the Camper Bike. Perfect for a lonely get away, provided you have the calf muscles to get it further than a mile past your front door.

When discussing mobile homes, it would be an insult to the fabulous 60’s if we didn’t include the classic VW Camper Van. They’re iconic, good-looking, and just short of perfect for a couples holiday. Plus, you can pick up a pre-loved VW Camper from as little as £18,000. Total up the cost of an annual holiday and you’ll see that these little hippy-vans will pay for themselves eventually.

So what would you rather be seen in as you cruise down the motorway towards your summer holiday destination? Of course, if motor homes aren’t your thing, there’s always a good old-fashioned tent that can be packed into the boot of your car!
