Storage tips advice for the home

A lot of homes suffer with issues based around clutter and an untidy home is an unhappy home, as we all know. The last thing we want to be doing after a long day at work is to open the front door and find un-hoovered carpets underneath layers of toys, clothes and mounting piles of ironing and dishes.

In many instances the reason a house looks untidy is because it’s actually too small to accommodate the people living in it and all of their possessions. If you imagine a typically three-bedroom family home with two young children, they’re going to have a lot of toys lying around. The same is true when they grow up, only you replace the toys with clothes, sports equipment and games. There quite simply isn’t enough space for it all.

Furniture is one of the biggest issues in the home because it’s an essential ingredient, but also something that takes up a significant amount of space at the same time. Chairs, tables, wardrobes, drawers, they all take up room and before you know it – especially in a bedroom where you also have, obviously, a bed – there’s hardly anywhere left for you to walk around. So what’s the solution?

Well, utilizing the space available in little nooks and crannies around the home can be one great use of minimal space. The area under the stairs can be used as a storage cupboard or a place to hang your coats or keep your sports bags; while areas where the hot water cupboard cuts into space leaving you with an awkward area you can’t find a use for could prove an excellent cupboard for your clothes, toys or shoes.

Another overlooked area is the wall. We either hang pictures or paintings or put up posters and that’s often all we use it for. In a bedroom in particular, a bookcase could be used and pushed against the wall, allowing you to store all of your books, put any special items on display or use the top of the bookcase to keep your make up, toiletries or a lamp; while bookshelves can provide the same opportunity at eye level, rather than throwing everything around the bottom of the room – there is some carpet in there trust me!

If you don’t know what kind of bedroom furniture is available, try searching online for something along the lines of bookcases & bookshelves where you’ll see all kinds of options in terms of style and size.

Staying in the bedroom, another option is to replace your current bed with one that features storage beneath the mattress. A lot of modern beds come with hinges so that you can raise it and utilize the space usually taken up by the bedframe. In here you could store winter clothes, shoes, toys, sports equipment, school essentials and any other items that can cause the room to look cluttered and untidy.

It’s all about making the most of the space you do have, or the space you could potentially create, especially if moving to a larger property is not an option.
