Weve all been there. Its ten o’clock on a Thursday evening and our mind randomly wanders to I wonder what Keira Knightley’s house looks like. Do they have it on Google? They do. Its pleasant. A lot more modest than you were expecting maybe, but a house you wouldn’t turn your nose up at.
This is an English actress though, perhaps modesty is somewhere in her contract. The really impressive houses probably require a trip across the Atlantic. Ah America, home of the insatiably rich celebrities, whose houses are the Chanel dresses to our George at ASDA. You look at the mass of space, the home cinema, the indoor swimming pool, the bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe that could fit a car in it. You begin to feel something growing in the pit of your stomach. Is it yearning, or maybe jealousy? Whatever it is, its not going away, and as you scroll through more and more mansions you cant help but imagine what it would be like to live in one.
It must be nice. They seem quite happy with them. You assume anyway. But logistically, how convenient, or even welcoming, must a home like that be? They’re huge of course, and small houses aren’t usually desirable, but think of it this way.
How long must it take to get to the bathroom if you’re in the garden? And if you felt peckish in the middle of the night, would you have to trek through an acre-long dining room to get to the kitchen? A lot of these people live there on their own or with a partner, so how do they keep it tidy? You suppose the insatiably rich have the money for cleaners, but how often does that mean having a stranger in your house?
As cheesy as it sounds, everybody knows that its the memories we have in our houses that really make them feel like home. We can have swimming pools and eighteen bathrooms, and a fridge in every room so were never far from a snack, but if our memories there aren’t fond ones, in the end its just a big building with lots of stuff in it.
Home is about the satisfaction of decorating your two-foot bathroom to seem like the cosiest spa room in town-all with accessories from IKEA. Its about snuggling up to watch a film with your partner and knowing you don’t need a home cinema to make it special. Its about the things that make your home yours, not a show room only there to impress.
Celebrity homes are lavish, amazing creations, and every now and then they’re fun to look at. Its why MTV Cribs was so popular. However the thought thats easy to forget is that every house can have its own charm and its own importance. Good memories are not something you can buy. Unless you buy Netflix. And you can watch that in any house.
