While moving house is an exciting time of change, it can also be stressful and time consuming. Thankfully, there are a few useful moving house tips and guidelines that can make the process easier.

Taking Care of Bills

Between four to six weeks before moving day, it is important to notify certain companies that you will soon be changing your address. These include gas, water, electric, Internet provider, and phone companies. If moving locally, changing billing addresses is a simple process, though there will be a fee. Informing them of your move out date will ensure that you will only be billed for the time you lived in the house, and it will be easier to set up billing for your new home. Make sure you get the best deals on bills and home insurance by using MoneySupermarket.com and searching for the best policya and rates.

Moving

Packing is one of the most stressful components of moving but losing or damaging your belongings is even worse and its always a good idea to consider moving insurance.  If moving locally or to a nearby city, then renting a U-Haul or hiring a moving company will suffice in transporting your belongings. If moving long distances, then you also need to figure out how to move your car. You can either hire a service to do it, or you can drive the car yourself and have your belongings moved separately. Aim to have moving plans figured out a month before the moving date.

The night before and morning of moving day will probably be focused on packing. Make sure to label boxes with permanent marker, and clearly mark which boxes are fragile and need to be handled with care. It is also a good idea to count your boxes to ensure none of your belongings will get lost or be left behind.

Other Things to Keep in Mind

The time before you move is the time to notify certain service providers of your change of address. Update credit cards, bank information, insurance profiles, and any newspaper or magazine subscriptions. It is also important to notify the post office so any mail that is sent to your old address can be redirected to the correct location.

Also, keep family and friends updated of your moving plans. Let them know about your new address, phone number, and moving date so communication can be maintained.

Unpacking

Make it a point to unpack bedding, bathroom items, and perishable foods first. Moving day is always busy, so make sure to unpack the most important items needed first. Also, take your time, and don’t try to do everything in one day.
