In the blistering heat of summer, your AC unit can be a lifesaver, but nothing lasts forever. As technology improves, so does the efficiency of the modern air conditioner. Installing a new high-efficiency air conditioner might seem unnecessary, especially if your current unit runs perfectly fine. However, there are many reasons to upgrade your current AC unit to a new high-efficiency model.

Higher Efficiency

High-efficiency AC units are more than simply models that use less energy. They use the energy they do consume more wisely. Utilizing new technology, high-efficiency AC units use two-stage compressors instead of the older models’ single-stage systems. Single-stage compressors force the unit to work at full power, a massive waste of energy on days with milder weather. 

With a two-stage compressor, high and low settings kick on automatically. Most of the time, the unit will run on low, enough to effectively cool most average-sized homes on warm days. When it detects particularly hot temperatures, it moves up to high. It will then return to the lower setting once a more comfortable temperature has been reached.

Similarly, newer units also have variable speed air handlers, which decrease or increase the fan speed based on the temperature and cooling needs.

Old AC units are designed to pump cold air into your home. New high-efficiency systems are designed to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. Most people know the frustration of manually turning a system off when it gets too cold and back on again when it gets too warm. Older model air conditioning units were not typically made with environmental protection. Not only do they eat up a lot of electricity, but they use Freon to cool the air. While effective at acting as a refrigerant, Freon also contributes to ozone depletion. AC units were designed to use Freon as their cooling agent for many years until 2010, when the chemical R-410A started to replace it. R-410A cools air just as effectively as Freon but doesn’t contribute to ozone depletion.

New AC units have much better air filtration systems that help eliminate dust, pollen, dander, and other harmful particles from the air in your home. They also act as dehumidifiers, which helps control the growth of mould by lowering the moisture levels. Cleaner air helps prevent illness and creates a more comfortable environment for people with allergies.

Better Operation and Fewer Repairs

As the years go by, your air conditioning unit will inevitably start performing poorly. It may struggle to create cool air, make odd noises, or malfunction. It will also be more susceptible to breakdowns and necessary repairs. Being without a functional AC unit, especially if you have children, elderly or sick individuals living in the house, can be very difficult. 

Since newer systems perform better overall than older units and the need for repairs is lowered, they also tend to have a longer lifespan.

Another disadvantage to old systems is the lack of a warranty. Since older units are very likely to need repairs and new parts, the financial burden falls on you if you don’t have a valid warranty anymore. In addition, depending on the age of the unit, replacement parts could be incredibly expensive or unavailable. 

If your new unit suffers from a malfunction, damage, or a breakdown, you can get it repaired with little to no cost since new units come with brand-new warranties. Extended warranties are typically offered by most manufacturers, and some even offer plans to help cover the costs of yearly maintenance.

Save on Energy Costs

Higher efficiency and more automation within the AC unit allow you to save a lot of money on energy costs. Depending on the age and performance of your old unit and the maximum efficiency of your new system, you could save anywhere from 20 to 40 per cent on your electricity bill every month. Due to the speed at which the technology of air conditioners has advanced, even replacing a unit installed as recently as ten years ago may save you at least 20 per cent on your energy bills.

Increase the Value of Your Home
