Caydale Mill, Old Byland, North YorkshireYO62 5LQ
In 1143 the Cistercians founded a settlement at Old Byland, later transferred to Byland where the ruins of the Abbey can still be seen. It is likely that the mill had its origins around this period, probably grinding barley for animal feed, and occupying a glorious position of privacy and enchantment, similar to the riverside settlement at nearby Rievaulx.
The present mill house seems to date from the 16th century, though clearly with older origins. Heavy timbers in its construction provides evidence of an original cruck building. In the same family ownership for over 20 years, the house has been modernised and improved, with a handmade kitchen and 4-oven Aga, and a well-equipped separate cottage.
It is, however, the setting, in a private dale, which commends the property. Totally secluded, yet only a few minutes from Helmsley, this is a rarity the like of which is seldom seen.
•16th century mill house and cottage
•28 acres of land within the North York Moors National Park
•Mill stream and waterfall running through the grounds
•Set in a wooded valley
Outside
The access road crosses the stream on entering the property, and the stream is a dominant feature, running through the grounds with a diverted race creating a waterfall. On either side is the formal garden with flagstones and brick sett paths and a sunny terrace outside the kitchen. The land features banks of bluebells, daffodils, primroses, wild garlic and orchids, and is described as “unimproved limestone grassland”. It has been traditionally grazed by sheep.
The woodland includes oak, ash, blackthorn and hazel and part of the holding is an SSSI, being home to the rare Duke of Burgundy butterfly which thrives on primroses.
