I’ve written before, in jest, that you can’t walk more than 10 yards in London without passing a film festival, indie gallery or a fringe performance re-imagining Pulp Fiction as a Shakespeare play. However, what at first I believed to be hyperbolic cliché was outdone last month: Free-range culture isn’t just on every street corner anymore; now it’s moving in next door.

On June 12th, the west London district of Notting Hill saw the opening of a new kind of gallery: the anti-gallery. Fine art photography collective, heist, took a residential property in Linden Gardens and repurposed it from the ground up, eschewing the impersonal aesthetic of the typical ‘white cube gallery’ and opting for a more open and intimate experience. Combining fine cuisine and music tailored to the exhibit, heist created a cultural event that envelops the viewer by incorporating every sense.

This grand experiment was born out of a shared passion, beginning as a completely online venture masterminded by partners J. Harry Edmiston, Anna Pia Lubinus and Mashael Al-Rushaid. Photography advocates all, their objective was to better showcase the medium and make it more accessible to everyone, narrowing the chasm between artist and collector while creating a platform for new and established photographers from around the world to get their work out there.

Last month this culminated in the Heist Gallery London, the inaugural launch displaying various artists including Alfonso Batalla, Justnya Neryng, Andre Lichtenburg and Dean West. Celebrities of every stripe were also in attendance, including the likes of DJ Tolula Adeyemi, Jo Wood, Laura Whitmore and Lady Mary Charteris is to name a few with music provided by Jackson Scott & Into the Moon alongside Yorkshire band, Jam Jar.

The Heist London Gallery is the first of its kind: High-end art being exhibited in an inviting and intimate setting, shedding the formality and propriety of a gallery to offer a more comprehensive experience. And while even its mission statement outlines their intention to ‘create […] prints at an accessible price point, giving everyone the chance to invest in fine art photography’, their gallery is open by appointment only and their prints start at £800. Exclusivity is still the name of the game, no matter how wholesome the setting. Should the anti-gallery catch on, it may not be long before it’s gentrifying a neighbourhood near you.
