Most of us consider upgrading when we move to a new house – add on an extra bedroom or two, a bigger en-suite, greener garden – but how do you upgrade from a home that already has everything? Thats the question posed to Will Smith who has put his Calabasas home on the market for anyone with $42m in a cookie jar on top of their fridge. The tragedy here is that the Smiths spent seven years building their home and have only lived there for half that amount of time. Shared with his wife, Jada, and three kids, Willow, Jaden and Trey, the 150 acres of land consists of a meditation room, basketball court, eight-car garage, and a pool better described as a lagoon.

While Will Smith seems to toot the idea that if you’ve got the money then why not have your own lake and on-site recording studio, fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar has proudly shown that comfort can be found without the need to spend millions. Earlier this month, Lamar, whose net worth is estimated at around $9m, spent a modest $520,000 on a 4-bedroom house situated an hour outside of Los Angeles. For this price he landed himself a 7,800 square-foot plot that, while lacking the typical tennis court and acre-wide driveway, still boasts a decent sized kitchen and outdoor swimming pool.

So where will the Fresh Prince choose to lay his hat next? No one downgrades from a $42m house to one worth eight-hundred times less, but perhaps he will follow Lamar’s example and take residence somewhere a little less ostentatious than his Californian abode. The more interesting question, however, is who will replace the Smiths as ruler of this gaudy castle?
